Researchers have developed a potential new treatment for the eye disease glaucoma that could replace daily eye drops and surgery with a twice-a-year injection to control the buildup of pressure in the eye.

Donor and patient age more important in determining kidney transplant success

Infection by virus cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common and major complication following kidney transplantation. Previous studies have related CMV infection with increased kidney transplant failure and reduced patient survival. However, a new study published in the American Journal of Physiology—Renal Physiology reports that the age of the donor and the recipient, not CMV infection, are more important factors in determining transplant success.

People with low and very high levels of transferrin saturation ratio are at increased risk of death

A new study led by researchers at the Graduate Entry Medical School, University of Limerick has found that people with low levels and very high levels of a commonly measured laboratory test, the "transferrin saturation ratio" are at an increased risk of death. The test is a measure of the amount of available iron in the bloodstream with low levels generally reflecting a state of iron deficiency and high levels suggesting a relative excess.

Neogenix Oncology's ensituximab granted FDA orphan drug designation for pancreatic cancer treatment

Neogenix Oncology, Inc. (Neogenix) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted orphan drug designation to the company's product candidate ensituximab (monoclonal antibody NPC-1C) for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. The Company initiated in December 2009 a multi-center Phase I clinical trial of ensituximab (NPC-1C) for the treatment of advanced pancreatic and colorectal cancer.
