Plextronics finalizes $14 Million financing to fund its research, development and pilot manufacturing programs

Plextronics, Inc. announced today that it has completed a $14 million Series B-1 financing round. The round was led by Solvay North American Investments, LLC, a member of the Solvay Group, which is an international chemical and pharmaceutical group headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. Marking Solvay's second investment in three years, this $12 million investment makes Solvay the largest minority shareholder in Plextronics.

Study extends scientific understanding of how pheromones activate the vomeronasal organ

The vomeronasal organ (VNO) is one of evolution's most direct enforcers. From its niche within the nose in most land-based vertebrates, it detects pheromones and triggers corresponding basic-instinct behaviors, from compulsive mating to male-on-male death matches. A new study from the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, published online in Nature Neuroscience on July 29, 2012, extends the scientific understanding of how pheromones activate the VNO, and has implications for sensory transduction experiments in other fields.

Case of Legionnaires' disease in the city sparks alerts

A New York Police Department officer has contracted Legionnaires' disease leading to a spate of investigations by the health officials as to its source and potential capacity for spread. The officer however is at present on their way to recovery at a hospital located outside the city said health officials. Legionnaire's disease is a form of pneumonia that can become life threatening.

Study finds age-related racial disparities in youth suicide

New research suggests the suicide rate is roughly two times higher for black children ages 5-12 compared with white children of the same age group. The study, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), appears online May 21 in JAMA Pediatrics.
