Molecular tests that detect drug-resistant TB may become faster alternative to traditional testing

Novel molecular tests are gaining popularity as a rapid way to detect genetic mutations that render tuberculosis impervious to drugs. Yet, how well these new tests fare in gauging risk of actual drug failure and patient death has remained unclear.

Bellicum Pharmaceuticals starts phase I/II trial of novel advanced prostate cancer vaccine

Bellicum Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced dosing of the first patient in a Phase I/II clinical trial of BP-GMAX-CD1, a novel pharmacologically regulated dendritic cell vaccine for the treatment of prostate cancer. The disease-specific trial is being conducted under a Bellicum Investigational New Drug application allowed by the FDA in 2008. The company anticipates reporting initial results of the study in 2010.

FDA approves ultrasmall silica inorganic nanoparticle INDA for targeted molecular imaging of cancer

Researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Nanotechnology Center, along with collaborators at Cornell University and Hybrid Silica Technologies, have received approval for their first Investigational New Drug Application from the US Food and Drug Administration for an ultrasmall silica inorganic nanoparticle platform for targeted molecular imaging of cancer, which may be useful for cancer treatment in the future.

Home-based medical devices to grow over 1.6M by 2013: Report

Emerging Healthcare Solutions, Inc. applauded the results of a new report from InMedica on the world market for telemedicine, predicting that the use of home-based medical devices will drastically increase as telemedicine takes-off. According to the report, by 2013 the combined unit shipments of home-use digital blood-glucose meters, blood pressure monitors, weight scales, pulse oximeters and peak flow meters used in telemedical applications will grow to over 1.6 million.
