Almost 60 percent of women of childbearing age in the United States are overweight or obese. Obesity is a major public health issue, and has been linked to health problems like heart disease, cancer and hypertension. It can complicate pregnancy by increasing the mother's risk of having gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, preterm birth or a baby with birth defects. Maternal obesity is also linked to several adverse health outcomes for the infant that can persist into adulthood, such as type-2 diabetes, heart disease and mortality.

PBM Medco invests in comparative-effectiveness, safety research firm

The Wall Street Journal reports that pharmacy benefit manager Medco Health Solutions will buy United BioSource, a business that conducts safety and comparative effectiveness research, for $730 million.

Study provides insight into effects of interleukin-27 in regulatory T-cell biology, physiological functions of IL-27

In a new report published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, scientists lay the groundwork for the development of novel tumor therapies that may help rid the body of cancer by inhibiting the recruitment of a specific suppressive immune cell type called "regulatory T-cells." The approach described in the report shows that an immune molecule, called interleukin-27, promotes the recruitment of regulatory T-cells.
