25-year anniversary of the first neonatal cross-species heart transplantation to be celebrated

Monday, October 26, marks the 25-year anniversary of the first neonatal cross-species heart transplant in history. Dr. Leonard Bailey and a team of doctors at Loma Linda University Medical Center transplanted the heart of a baboon into an infant, born with uniformly lethal heart disease and known to the world as "Baby Fae," on October 26, 1984.

U.N. officials reiterate clean drinking water and sanitation are human rights issues

One year after the U.N. General Assembly "adopted a resolution declaring that safe and clean drinking water and sanitation is a human right," top U.N. officials on Wednesday "stressed the need to realize the human right to water and sanitation, stating that it is critical not only to a life of dignity but also to achieving progress in the areas such as poverty reduction, boosting child health and combating diseases," the U.N. News Centre reports.

Data evaluating use of nab-paclitaxel for treatment of pancreatic cancer to be presented at ASCO 2010

Abraxis BioScience, Inc., a fully integrated biotechnology company, previously announced it will be presenting more than 30 studies, including new clinical data evaluating the use of nanoparticle albumin bound driven chemotherapy, nab-paclitaxel (ABRAXANE for Injectable suspension; paclitaxel protein albumin-bound particles for injectable suspension) for the treatment of pancreatic cancer at the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago.

Physicians are more likely to be registered as organ donor compared to general public

A study that included about 15,000 physicians found that they were more likely to be registered as an organ donor compared to the general public, according to a study in the July 16 issue of JAMA.
