6 in every 100 patients die in hospital due to adverse drug reaction

Six of every 100 patients who die in hospital do so as a consequence of an adverse drug reaction or, in other words, a fatal reaction to medicines. Those are the conclusions of a research carried out at the Department of Medicine of the University of Granada, in collaboration with the Clinical Hospital San Cecilio of Granada, by Alfredo Jose Pardo Cabello and directed by Professors Emilio Puche Canas (Department of Pharmacology) and Francisco Javier Gomez Jimenez (Department of Medicine).

Obese patients with fatty liver disease show only small benefit on lipoprotein levels with moderate exercise

New research found that moderate exercise does not improve lipoprotein concentrations in obese patients with non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Results published in the June issue of Hepatology, a journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, report that moderate physical activity produces only a small decrease in triglyceride and alanine transaminase (ALT) levels.

Trial date set for patent litigation in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware

Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that a trial date has been set for patent litigation in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware against Teva Parenteral Medicines, Inc. (TPM), Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. alleging infringement of Cubist's US Patent Nos. 6,468,967 and 6,852,689, which expire on September 24, 2019, and US Patent No. RE39,071, which expires on June 15, 2016.

Study finds similar weight-loss outcomes for patients covered by insurance and out-of-pocket payers

Individuals whose insurance covered the cost of a comprehensive medical weight-loss program had one-year outcomes very similar to those of patients who paid for the treatment out of pocket, according to an observational study conducted at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
