The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is aiming to become a leader in using health information technology (HIT) to change the way patients experience medical care, to decrease medical mistakes, and to improve health outcomes.
According to MassDevice.com, the online business journal of the medical device industry, medical device approval times under the Food & Drug Administration's 510(k) clearance process jumped 30 percent between 2005 and 2008. MassDevice's exclusive investigation of 10 years of FDA data, Eye on the FDA: H1 2009, shows that approval times for medical devices increased nearly 2 percent — while the number of 510(k) applications declined more than 19 percent — even as the FDA's budgets and staff levels rose.
The Alliance of Specialty Medicine (Alliance) today called on Congress to permanently fix Medicare's Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) after lawmakers once again passed a temporary fix, thereby postponing unprecedented reimbursement cuts to Medicare doctors until 2012.
According to a committee of MPs, a "more open culture" is required to handle complaints about the health service in England. The committee has members from different political parties and said the system should be overhauled to ensure patients who complained were treated fairly. They also criticized the role of the Health Ombudsman and said it was not dealing with enough complaints.
