SAMHSA awards $12.2M in grants to train behavioral health care providers

Five minority fellowship program grants are being awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for a total of up to $12.2 million. These three-year grants will be used to train a new wave of behavioral health care providers. The program focuses on increasing the number of culturally competent behavioral health professionals available in underserved racially and ethnically diverse communities.

Integra launches Trel-XPress Demineralized Bone Matrix for orthopedic reconstruction surgery

Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corporation announced today the launch of Trel-XPress Demineralized Bone Matrix, expanding its portfolio of bone grafting substitutes for the orthopedic extremity reconstruction surgeon, which includes Integra OS Osteoconductive Scaffold, a synthetic bone void filler manufactured from beta tri-calcium phosphate and type I bovine collagen; Trel-X, a demineralized bone matrix; and Trel-XC, a demineralized bone matrix premixed with cancellous bone.

Nicknamed "blackout in a can" or "liquid cocaine," alcoholic energy drink Four Loko seems like the perfect cocktail because the combination of alcohol and caffeine can heighten the buzz for those drinking it. The mix can be especially tempting for college students, even more so if they have or are predisposed to alcoholism. Dr. Kimberly Dennis, Medical Director at Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center, warns the effects can be seriously damaging to one's health, and even deadly.

Remdesivir caused dangerously low heart rate in COVID-19 patients

After beginning treatment with remdesivir for COVID-19, a patient experienced significant bradycardia, or low heart rate. Her physicians used a dopamine infusion to stabilize her through the five-day course of remdesivir treatment, and her cardiac condition resolved itself at the end of the treatment.
