Study estimates use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes among women of reproductive age in the U.S.

Cigarette use was lower among pregnant women in the United States (8 percent) than among nonpregnant women (14.3 percent) but rates of e-cigarette use were almost identical (3.6 percent for pregnant women and 3.3 percent for nonpregnant women) in a study based on national health survey data.

Surgery to correct congenital heart disease linked to increased risk of adult hypertension

In a medical records study covering thousands of children, a U.S.-Canadian team led by researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine concludes that while surgery to correct congenital heart disease (CHD) within 10 years after birth may restore young hearts to healthy function, it also may be associated with an increased risk of hypertension - high blood pressure - within a few months or years after surgery.

Promising functional readouts of immunity in a blood-stage malaria vaccine trial

A malaria vaccine remains the most desired tool to combat the worsening malaria epidemic in many developing countries. Pierre Druilhe and colleagues (from the Institut Pasteur in Paris) have completed the first human trial of a vaccine based on MSP3, a protein present on the surface of the malaria parasite, with very encouraging results.

New study stresses importance of studying freezing episodes in Parkinson's patients

A recent study, led by Ryan P. Duncan of Washington University at St. Louis, suggested patients with Parkinson's disease who suffer from freezing episodes are more likely to have impaired balance than those who do not. This is an important discovery as Parkinson's disease typically develops in elderly patients, who cannot afford to be unstable, lose balance and potentially fall, which could result in major injuries.

Researchers explore how M6P deficiency affects different kinds of immune cells

A group of white blood cells known as B cells, which play a key role in the human immune response, need a protein-targeting signal called mannose 6-phosphate (M6P) in order to proliferate, differentiate, and present immune cell-activating antigens, according to a study in The Journal of Cell Biology.
