Sleep disturbance following fracture related to emotional well being, says study

​Sleep disturbance is an extremely common complaint following orthopaedic trauma. In a new study presented today at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), researchers assessed the functional status of 1,095 patients following acute fractures to the proximal humerus (shoulder), distal radius (wrist), ankle and tibial plateau (shinbone), using standard orthopaedic tests and assessments.

Fresenius Medical Care to acquire KNC and expand dialysis services business in Russian Federation

Fresenius Medical Care AG & Co. KGaA, the world's largest provider of dialysis products and services, is expanding its dialysis services business in the Russian Federation. The company announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire KNC (KRAEVOY NEFROLOGICHESKIY CENTR), a private operator of dialysis clinics in Russia's Krasnodar region. The acquired operations will add approximately $25 million in annual revenue and are expected to be accretive to earnings in the first year after closing of the transaction.

Study provides neural explanation for why some skills are easier to learn than others

Learning is easier when it only requires nerve cells to rearrange existing patterns of activity than when the nerve cells have to generate new patterns, a study of monkeys has found. The scientists explored the brain's capacity to learn through recordings of electrical activity of brain cell networks.

States face SCHIP funding shortfalls as Congress debates program's funding, formula, eligibility

Fourteen states this year are facing federal budgetary shortfalls for SCHIP because of inflation, higher enrollment levels and program expansions, USA Today reports. Democratic lawmakers want to provide an additional $745 million through a bill funding the Iraq war to maintain coverage levels through the end of this fiscal year.
