School Breakfast Program in NYC boosts student participation

Serving free breakfast in New York City's classrooms has boosted the number of students eating what some consider the most important meal of the day at school, according to research by New York University's Institute for Education and Social Policy and the Center for Policy Research at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

Scott & White conducts DBS research for Parkinson's patients

At Scott & White Memorial Hospital, a multi-disciplinary team of neurosurgeons, neurologists, neurophysiologist, neuropsychologists and a movement disorders specialist are offering hope to some Parkinson's patients with a treatment called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). DBS involves placing a thin wire that carries electrical currents deep within the brain on Parkinson's patients who are no longer benefitting from medications, and have significant uncontrollable body movements called dyskinesia. Scott & White is also performing research into the effects of DBS on the non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease including "drenching sweats," bladder dysfunction, depression, hallucination, anxiety, and dementia as well as intestinal disorders, loss of sense of smell, and sleep disturbances.

Somanetics obtains exclusive sublicense to new cerebral autoregulation technology

Somanetics Corporation today announced that it has signed an Exclusive Sublicense Agreement with Raba Equity Partners II, LLC ("Raba coreFoundry"). Under terms of the agreement, Somanetics has obtained exclusive rights, subject to specified rights of the U.S. Government and rights retained by The Johns Hopkins University, to new cerebral autoregulation technology developed at The Johns Hopkins University.

Cook Medical's Resonance Metallic Ureteral Stent demonstrates long-term success in 29-month clinical study

A 29-month clinical study demonstrated the long-term success of Cook Medical's Resonance® Metallic Ureteral Stent in providing drainage for patients with both benign and malignant upper urinary tract obstructions, according to results presented today at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA). The findings suggest that metallic stents provide adequate drainage and can be maintained in situ for 12 months without significant encrustation.
