Sunbathers have long known that melanin in their skin cells provides protection from the damage caused by visible and ultraviolet light. More recent studies have shown that melanin, which is produced by multitudes of the planet's life forms, also gives some species protection from ionizing radiation. In certain microbes, in particular some organisms from near the former nuclear reactor facilities in Chernobyl, melanin has even been linked to increased growth in the presence of ionizing radiation.

Compared to peers at public schools, adolescents who are homeschooled are more likely to report greater character strengths and fewer risky health behaviors later in life, but are less likely to attain a college degree, according to a new study published this week in the open-access journal PLOS ONE by Tyler VanderWeele of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, US, and colleagues.

Belgian FAMHP approves Oncolytics' Phase 3 combination trial of REOLYSIN in head and neck cancers

Oncolytics Biotech Inc. today announced that it has received approval from the Belgian Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAMHP) to conduct its Phase 3 trial examining REOLYSIN in combination with paclitaxel and carboplatin in patients with platinum-refractory head and neck cancers. This is the same trial that was agreed to by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Special Protocol Assessment (SPA) process and the U.K. Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
