New grade of polycarbonate meets growing trend for thinner walls in medical devices

As demand for smaller, less intrusive medical devices continues to grow, designers and OEMs are increasingly seeking materials with properties that can make these new devices possible. Bayer MaterialScience LLC is launching a new grade of medical polycarbonate to address this need during the Medical Design & Manufacturing East conference, taking place at the Jacob K. Researchers look for surrogate endpoints to predict early benefit of cancer drugs

Great hopes are always placed in new cancer therapies. However, whether new surgical techniques, drugs or radiation therapies actually prolong the life of cancer patients, or even cure them, can often only be reliably assessed after several years' of testing. Researchers are therefore looking for proxy markers that after initiation of cancer therapy can reliably predict as quickly as possible whether the treatment has a benefit.

This unique ability helps make the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa ubiquitous, but it also might leave these antibiotic-resistant organisms vulnerable to a new form of treatment.

Study suggests reimbursements can address inappropriate antibiotic usage

Antibiotic use appears to have increased among older adults whose prescription drug coverage improved as a result of enrolling in Medicare Part D, with the largest increases for broad-spectrum, newer and more expensive drugs, according to a report in the August 9/23 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Vanishing bile duct syndrome refers to a group of disorders characterized by destruction and disappearance of intrahepatic (inside the liver) bile ducts. Multiple causes have been identified including infections, malignancies, autoimmune conditions and adverse effects of medications. The usual course of this condition is variable and many patients with VBDS respond to treatment of the underlying condition and/ or removal of the offending agent. However, others progress to cirrhosis and end stage liver disease requiring liver transplantation.
