Researchers evaluate use of regenerative human umbilical cord for in-utero spina bifida repair

In a study to be presented Saturday, Jan. 28, in the oral concurrent session at 8:45 a.m. PST, at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's annual meeting, The Pregnancy Meeting, researchers evaluated a possible regenerative patch by using human umbilical cord in two studies titled Cryopreserved Human Umbilical Cord (HUC) vs Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) for In-Utero Spina Bifida Repair and the study Conventional vs cryopreserved human umbilical cord (HUC) patch based on repair for in-utero spina bifida in a sheep model.

EndoChoice announces acquisition of Pathworks Anatomic Pathology Laboratory

EndoChoice, Inc. announced today that it has acquired Pathworks Anatomic Pathology Laboratory. Founded in 1989, Pathworks is a College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited national reference laboratory located in Atlanta, GA. Robert Smith, MD, founder of the laboratory, will assume the Medical Director position of EndoChoice Pathology, a wholly-owned subsidiary of EndoChoice, Inc.

ECMO and heart procedures performed as a bridge to lung transplantation

Surgeons at UK HealthCare recently became the first ever to perform two specific procedures together as a bridge to lung transplantation. Wanda Craig, of Lexington, Ky., is the first patient in history to receive these procedures, and at the age of 68, she is also the oldest living human to be bridged to transplant using an artificial lung device, also known as an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
