USPTO grants CyDex Pharmaceuticals patent for Captisol

CyDex Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company, today announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued a patent to the company entitled "Sulfoalkyl Ether Cyclodextrin Compositions and Methods of Preparation Thereof." This patent, along with other previously issued technology patents, will provide broader protection for CyDex's Captisol® technology until 2028.

45% of American adults not inclined to get vaccinated against seasonal flu

Two in five at-risk American adults who would benefit from vaccination against seasonal flu are missing out on the protective shots because they believe they do not need them and are not inclined to be vaccinated. And among those who say they do intend to take up the vaccine, nearly half get around to it, according to Dr. Katharine Harris from the RAND Corporation in Arlington, USA, and her team.

Years of debating liberal friends and colleagues has brought me to an understanding: This question is at the core of the debate. The absurd notion of a "right" to health care underlies the movement towards socialized medicine. If this right does exist, it becomes a moral imperative to guarantee it for all, i.e. "universal coverage."
