HGS, GSK announce full presentation of BLISS-76 Phase 3 BENLYSTA trial results for SLE at EULAR 2010

Human Genome Sciences, Inc. and GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK) today announced the full presentation of results from BLISS-76, one of two pivotal Phase 3 trials of BENLYSTA® (belimumab) in seropositive patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The results will be presented today in Rome at the 2010 Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR).

Growing eggs and sperm to treat infertility

Scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles, have reported, in the journal Cell Reports, the mechanism of how the very early precursor or stem cells which eventually give rise to the germ cells, eggs and sperm, are formed over the course of development. This could help create eggs and sperms under laboratory conditions to help infertile people who don't have sperms, or eggs, for instance.

Ponatinib ‘superior' to sequential second-generation TKI treatment in CML

Patients with chronic myelogenous leukaemia resistant or intolerant to at least one second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor have a higher probability of achieving a response to the third-generation TKI ponatinib than to a further second-generation TKI, research indicates.

Non-small cell lung cancer patients who undergo PCI decrease their risk of developing brain metastases

Patients with non-small cell lung cancer treated with preventative brain radiation (called prophylactic cranial irradiation or PCI), significantly decrease their risk of developing brain metastases (cancer spread in the brain) by more than 50 percent (from 18 percent to 8 percent), compared to those who did not receive the treatment, according to a randomized study presented at the plenary session November 2, 2009, at the 51st Annual Meeting of American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).
