New way to improve vaccines against cancer and infectious diseases

Research groups from Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the University of Geneva have discovered a new way of improving vaccines against infectious diseases and for use in cancer therapies. Scientists have shown a basic new mechanism that stimulates the body's own alarm signals in case of viral infection to animate the immune system to maximum performance.

Diets double the odds a teenage girl will begin smoking

Starting to diet seems to double the odds a teenage girl will begin smoking, a University of Florida study has found. UF researchers, who analyzed the dieting and smoking practices of 8,000 adolescents, did not find the same link in boys, who were also less likely than girls to diet, according to findings released Friday in the American Journal of Health Promotion.

IDEXX Laboratories fourth quarter revenues increase 5% to $283.8 million

IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., today reported that revenues for the fourth quarter of 2010 increased 5% to $283.8 million, from $270.3 million for the fourth quarter of 2009. Organic revenue growth, as defined below, was 6%. Earnings per diluted share ("EPS") for the quarter ended December 31, 2010 increased 22% to $0.62, compared to $0.51 for the same period in the prior year.

Hormone involved in obesity could increase the risk for sepsis infection

A group of scientists from Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, led by Luís Moita, discovered that a hormone that has been pointed out as a treatment for obesity reduces the resistance to infection caused by bacteria and is a risk factor for sepsis.
