On Sunday, February 7, the country will commemorate the tenth annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. It's a day that reminds us that HIV/AIDS is still a public health crisis in the US. And it's a day when communities and organizations across the country come together to recognize the impact this disease has had on the African American community.
Cutting edge, patient-specific vaccine treatments like DCVax® provide for a longer life expectancy along with a better quality of life for brain cancer patients, an improvement over current conventional brain tumor treatments. "The vaccine that I received has extended the median survival of Grade IV brain cancer (GBM) from 14.6 months, with conventional treatment, to over 36 months," stated Bob Gibbs, a 7 year brain cancer survivor, who has defied the odds statistically, thanks to the experimental brain cancer vaccine DCVax®.
In a new study scientists have successfully transformed human skin cells into blood without first being sent through a primordial, stem-cell-like state. The findings were published online in the journal Nature. Earlier work has shown that fibroblast cells from mouse skin, treated with the right cocktail of chemicals, can be transformed into neurons and heart muscle. This is a first with human cells.
Since their discovery in the 1990s, microRNAs have proven to play a complex role in normal and abnormal functioning of many organ systems. In the April issue of Translational Research, entitled "MicroRNAs: A Potential New Frontier for Medicine," an international group of medical experts explores several themes related to our current understanding of microRNAs and the role they may play in the future of medicine.
The prevalence of taste disorders in Australian children could be three times above the level defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a major public health crisis, new research has found.
