Based on cardio-protective effects, Eribis' candidate drug has the potential to become an important new therapy for treating acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and reperfusion injury (damage to tissue caused when blood supply returns after a period of ischemia), as well as for surgical preconditioning. The new round of investment from Karolinska Development AB will allow Eribis to strengthen the preclinical material.

New study sounds a note of caution in using probiotics in ICU

It's become common for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), both children and adults, to receive probiotics. Often, they are started at home to counteract diarrhea caused by antibiotics. There is also interest in using probiotics proactively in the ICU. A large multicenter clinical trial in Canada is testing whether probiotics would prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia in adult ICU patients.

Research on repair of broken hearts hints at possibility of new designer cardiovascular therapies

Unlike the self-repair abilities of our skin, bone and other tissues, which can readily heal and rebuild themselves after injury, evolution has left the mammalian heart with relatively little regenerative capacity.
