The Society of Interventional Radiology offers numerous resources just in time for September's national peripheral arterial disease (or PAD) awareness month. As recent medical studies continue to highlight the seriousness of PAD, these resources are welcome additions to libraries for interventional radiologists and primary care physicians who want to learn more about minimally invasive treatments for this disease that affects an estimated 10 million people in the United States.

Regardless of race, fewer people see a kidney specialist before starting dialysis if they live in predominantly black communities, reports a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society Nephrology. The results highlight the importance of understanding why patients in predominantly black areas are less likely to receive kidney-related care while their kidney function is clearly declining.
Children with frequent infections in the first 18 months of life have a slightly increased risk of later developing coeliac disease compared with children who have few infections. This is the conclusion from a study by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
A multicentric translational research study carried out by groups of the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute, Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, the University of Barcelona, Hospital Clínic, the University of Vic, Sant Pau i la Santa Creu Hospital, the Rare Diseases Networking Biomedical Research Centre and the Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique, has demonstrated the potential of the amino acid L-serine - administered as a dietary supplement - to improve the neuronal function of a patient with a mutation of glutamate receptors associated with atypical Rett syndrome with severe encephalopathy.
