BioOhio and the Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center (GCIC) have launched an expanded and improved Ohio Bioscience Resource Directory, the most comprehensive online collection of Ohio companies, organizations, and research centers involved in the biosciences.
Metabolon, Inc., leaders in global metabolomics, biomarker discovery and biochemical analysis, announced today the grant of US Patent 7,781,160 entitled "Biomarkers Related to Metabolic Age and Methods Using the Same". The USPTO awarded the patent to Metabolon on August 24, 2010. This is the 12th patent issued to Metabolon.
People have long taken for granted that glasses and contact lenses improve vision for nearsightedness, but the genetic factors behind the common condition have remained blurry. Now researchers at Duke Medicine are closer to clearing this up.
More than 1 billion people worldwide are living with vision impairment because they do not get the care they need for conditions like short and far sightedness, glaucoma, diabetes, and cataracts, according to the first-ever World Report on Vision issued by the World Health Organization.
Approximately 30,000-40,000 people die from liver disease each year, according to the American Liver Foundation. For people who experience acute liver failure, the only proven treatment has been liver transplantation. Researchers at Mayo Clinic have developed and are testing an alternative to liver transplantation called the Spheroid Reservoir Bioartificial Liver that can support healing and regeneration of the injured liver, and improve outcomes and reduce mortality rates for patients with acute liver failure — without requiring a transplant.
