Scientists have created an elaborate map of more than a billion brain cell connections, helping to shed light on how memories are formed and recalled.
Doctors need better ways to detect and monitor heart disease, the leading cause of death in industrialized countries. A team led by Massachusetts General Hospital researchers with support from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering has developed an improved optical imaging technique that found differences between potentially life-threatening coronary plaques and those posing less imminent danger for patients with coronary artery disease.
Human white blood cells, engineered to recognize other malignant immune cells, could provide a novel therapy for patients with highly lethal B cell cancers such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), according to researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).
In its first decade, the GAVI Alliance has helped prevent the deaths of more than five million children by introducing more widespread vaccination in low-income countries, "[b]ut, going forward, the alliance is going to have to think more about getting parents to vaccinate their kids - the demand side of health - especially if it wants to repeat the huge victory of wiping out a disease" such as smallpox, Charles Kenny writes in his weekly column for Foreign Policy.
OraSure Technologies, Inc., the market leader in oral fluid diagnostics, announced today that it has enrolled the first subject in its final phase of clinical studies for United States Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") approval of the Company's OraQuick® Rapid HIV-1/2 test for sale in the U.S. consumer or over-the-counter ("OTC") market.
