Traditional methods for assessing patients after cardiac arrest may be underestimating their chances for survival and good outcomes, according to a new study by University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine researchers now available online in the journal Resuscitation.
Johns Hopkins student-built devices—a blood clot detection system and a concealable, hands-free breast pump—have won two of the top three awards in a national contest that recognizes innovative biomedical engineering designs that have high commercial potential and social impact.
Artemisinin, a potent anti-malarial drug, has been widely hailed as a promising alternative cancer treatment. Scientists from the National University of Singapore recently showed that its anti-cancer properties could be enhanced by 10 folds when used in combination with Aminolaevulinic acid, a photosensitizer or a drug which, upon exposure to light, leads to generation of free radicals that can kill cells.
The Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative, Inc. (PTEI) has been awarded a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop a unique educational program focused on engaging middle school students, their teachers, and the general public in the wonders of tissue engineering and its applications.
