Researchers at the Institute for Genome Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine have been awarded a research program contract from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to sequence, assemble, and annotate a population of bacterial pathogens using two high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies in support of the expansion of a vetted public reference database.
While Americans remain divided over the new health reform law, "they aren't clamoring for its repeal. … Instead, the public seems willing to listen to candidates who would give the overhaul a chance and fix or improve it as needed. That's the signal from some surveys and a congressional race in a bellwether Pennsylvania district."
Nativis, Inc., a La Jolla, Calif.-based life science company, has been issued patents in Japan, China and India for its innovative technology that captures the unique signals of approved drugs at the atomic level and then delivers the signal in a solution to treat serious illnesses. The technology, which also has U.S., Canadian and Australian patents, promises to transform the treatment of diseases, including those for which there are no known cures, such as brain cancer.
Knowing the exact number of molecules located at specific junctures in cells can be a critical measure of health as well as disease.
