Developing type 2 diabetes is a lengthy process. An early sign that it has begun is high levels of insulin in the blood. As long as the insulin-producing beta cells are able to compensate for the increased demand, for example when the individual is overweight, the blood sugar levels remain normal. It is not until the capacity for insulin secretion falls below the level needed that type 2 diabetes becomes a fact. The latter stage generally goes quickly, as the stressed beta cells work themselves to death.
In studying how neurotransmitters travel between cells - by analysis of events in the dimensions of nanometers - Cornell researchers have discovered that an electrical current thought to be present during that process does not, in fact, exist.
Cancer researchers in NSW will now have access to a range of cutting edge technology, including a world-first super-resolution microscope at UNSW, thanks a $4 million investment by the Cancer Institute NSW.
Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. today announced results from the placebo group analyses of the ADAGIO study that were presented at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology. The ADAGIO study stands out from other Parkinson's disease trials as it is the largest clinical study conducted in patients who were still in the very early stages of their disease course (average time from PD diagnosis of 4.5 months).
