Ageing is a common factor in many diseases. So, what if it were possible to treat them by acting on the causes of ageing or, more specifically, by acting on the shortening of telomeres, the structures that protect chromosomes?
A multidisciplinary team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has developed carbon nanotubes that can be used as sensors for cancer drugs and other DNA-damaging agents inside living cells. The sensors, made of carbon nanotubes wrapped in DNA, can detect chemotherapy drugs such as cisplatin as well as environmental toxins and free radicals that damage DNA.
Nektar Therapeutics today announced positive results from a Phase 2 clinical study evaluating single-agent NKTR-102 in women with platinum-resistant/refractory ovarian cancer. A total of 68 patients were enrolled with platinum-resistant disease, half of whom were platinum refractory. All 68 patients were evaluable for the primary endpoint of objective response rate using Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup criteria, which is a combination of response by tumor imaging (RECIST) and/or ovarian cancer biomarker (CA-125) criteria.
In a perspective published in the Journal of Hospital Medicine, experts from the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Medicine, Office of Equity and Inclusion and Center for Diversity and Inclusion call for a more inclusive and culturally competent approach to clinical care based on best practices developed during the COVID-19 surge in Massachusetts.
