Gene therapy for a severe inherited blindness, which produced dramatic improvements last year in 12 children and young adults who received the treatment in a clinical trial, has cleared another hurdle. The same research team that conducted the human trial now reports that a study in animals has shown that a second injection of genes into the opposite, previously untreated eye is safe and effective, with no signs of interference from unwanted immune reactions following the earlier injection.
Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals, Inc., an affiliate of Ipsen, today announced that Somatuline Depot (lanreotide) Injection 120 mg (referred to as Somatuline) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs) in adult patients with unresectable, well or moderately differentiated, locally advanced or metastatic disease to improve progression-free survival (PFS).
Patients with stage III colon cancer treated with 5-FU-based chemotherapy after complete surgical removal of their tumor after 1995 had improved overall survival with no change in time to recurrence compared to patients treated before 1995. In contrast, patients with stage II colon cancer treated after 1995 had longer time to recurrence and time from recurrence to death compared to those patients treated prior to 1995, according to Mayo Clinic and Gr Hospitalier Pitie-Salpetriere, Paris, researchers.
Professor Roger Hart told the annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology that the negative effect of gum disease on conception was of the same order of magnitude as the effect of obesity.
In an effort to address childhood hunger and its impact on child development, health and learning, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service, are notifying states that Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funds available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act can be used to assist families through the Summer Food Service Program.
