A landmark report on the Global Economic Impact of Dementia finds that Alzheimer's disease and other dementias are exacting a massive toll on the global economy, with the problem set to accelerate in coming years. The World Alzheimer Report 2010 - issued on World Alzheimer's Day by Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) - provides the most current and comprehensive global picture of the economic and social costs of the illness.
GI Dynamics, a leader in non-surgical treatments for type 2 diabetes and obesity, today announced that additional results from a previously reported clinical study regarding mechanisms of action will be presented on Saturday, August 29, 2009 by Manoel Galvao Neto, M.D., scientific coordinator, Gastro Obeso Center, Sao Paulo, Brazil and lead investigator for the study, at the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) 14th World Congress in Paris, France.

An influenza virus which was pandemic in 1918 is seen to be very closely related, structurally speaking, to the H1N1 swine flu vaccine. This virus has the dubious distinction of having claimed between 40 million to 100 million lives in the flu wave of 1918.
Giving a local anaesthetic during a Caesarean section helps manage pain after the operation and can reduce consumption of painkillers, according to Cochrane Researchers. The researchers recommend local anaesthetics as part of integrated pain management strategies for Caesarean section operations, provided that consideration is given to the cost.
