The New York Times reports on an emerging approach that allows many elderly patients to stay in their homes and still receive the medical care and social services the usually would get in a nursing home.
Biogen Idec and Swedish Orphan Biovitrum today announced Phase 1/2a trial data showing that the companies' long-lasting fully-recombinant factor VIII Fc fusion protein (rFVIIIFc) was well tolerated and demonstrated an approximately 1.7-fold increase in half-life compared with Advate, a commercially-available factor VIII product, in 16 previously-treated patients with severe hemophilia A.
Intrauterine devices, originally developed as contraceptives, can also be used to treat and cure cancer of the endometrium according to new research published online in the cancer journal, Annals of Oncology today (Wednesday 29 September). The finding opens the way for young women with the disease, which affects the lining of the womb, to be treated without the need for a hysterectomy, thus preserving their fertility until they have had all the children they want.
Shih-Hsin (Eddy) Yang, M.D., Ph.D., the ROAR Southeast Cancer Foundation Endowed Chair in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Radiation Oncology, has received a $450,000 grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure to further investigate HER2-positive breast tumor susceptibility to PARP inhibitors.
