A meeting of the WHO's emergency committee held Friday to discuss the H1N1 (swine) flu ended without a pandemic declaration, but experts concluded that declarations would now be based upon the severity and transmission pattern of a virus, Reuters reports (Nebehay, Reuters, 6/5). "The Emergency Committee is composed of international experts and its task is to give advice to the WHO chief on influenza outbreak responses," according to Xinhua writes (Xinhua, 6/6).
During a time of flux for U.S. health care, employers and purchasers are increasingly concerned about how much value they receive for their enormous investment in health care. In a presentation yesterday evening at the World Health Congress Innovative Drivers of Value Based Purchasing Seminar, Leah Binder, president and CEO of the employer-driven nonprofit The Leapfrog Group, unveiled a new tool that allows purchasers to calculate how much they spend annually on unnecessary costs due to medical errors that occur within general acute care hospitals.
BioSpec Global Solutions Inc., and partner -ICBS Ltd., announced today that it has begun development of three new bio filter for the testing of E. coli, salmonella, listeria and pseudomonas in food samples. Development of the Antibody/antigen multiple discrete filters and optical system for the simultaneous analysis of E.coli, salmonella, listeria and pseudomonas in food samples.
According to HSE researchers, men with a high 2D:4D ratio (i.e. those whose index finger is longer than their ring finger) tend to be better educated. These findings are presented in the paper "2D: 4D and lifetime educational outcomes: Evidence from the Russian RLMS survey" in Personality and Individual Differences.
Innovative Science Solutions (ISS) announced today that a thorough review of published scientific studies revealed no direct evaluation of a relationship between crib bumper pad use and infant death.
