Speaking at an event organized by the Every Woman Every Child initiative on Thursday, "Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon [called on] business leaders attending the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, to increase their investment in women's education and health to ensure their well-being and encourage their participation in the world economy," the U.N. News Centre reports.
The initiative, which is part of the White House's "We Can't Wait" agenda, will release funds to hire and train health workers as part of its effort to give the U.S. economy a boost.
Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have uncovered a new signal transduction pathway specifically devoted to the regulation of alternative RNA splicing, a process that allows a single gene to produce or code multiple types of protein variants. The discovery, published in the June 27, 2012 issue of Molecular Cell, suggests the new pathway might be a fruitful target for new cancer drugs.
Johns Hopkins scientists have identified a molecular marker called "Mig 6" that appears to accurately predict longer survival - up to two years - among patients prescribed two of the most widely used drugs in a class of anticancer agents called EGFR inhibitors.
Roberta Diaz Brinton, PhD, an internationally recognized expert on Alzheimer's disease and inaugural director of the Center for Innovation in Brain Science at the University of Arizona Health Sciences, has received a five-year, $1.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health Institute on Aging.
