Talecris Biotherapeutics Holdings Inc. announced today that a jury in the General Court of Justice, Superior Court Division, Wake County, North Carolina, rendered a verdict on December 13, 2010 in the amount of $37 million in favor of Plasma Centers of America, LLC, against its subsidiary, Talecris Plasma Resources, Inc., in a breach of contract claim.
A 3-year, retrospective study by cardiologists from the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation and the University of Minnesota determined that 28.8% of patients with significant coronary artery disease (CAD) who did not undergo complete revascularization had a higher mortality rate than patients completely revascularized. Results of this study appear in the May issue of Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions.
Recent advances in immunotherapy have allowed doctors at the University of Colorado Cancer Center to more effectively treat melanomas that spread to other parts of the body. Immunotherapy drugs such as checkpoint inhibitors, which are commonly used to treat melanomas, work to strengthen a patient's immune system so that it can prevent a tumor from "turning off" the ability of the immune system to fight it.
Researchers at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center have identified how breast cancer cells hide from immune cells to stay alive. The discovery could lead to better immunotherapy treatment for patients.
