Sustained quality improvement changes in ICU benefits both patients and health care facility

In a pre- and post-evaluation study, Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers found that quality improvement changes made in an intensive care unit (ICU) were still in practice five years later — benefiting both patients and the health care facility. Those changes included new protocols for treating critically ill patients by encouraging early physical therapy in the ICU.

Ivabradine effective in reducing risk of cardiac fibrosis, diastolic heart failure

The findings of a Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) study published in the scientific journal Cardiology suggest that ivabradine, a heart rate reduction medication, is also effective in reducing the risk of diastolic heart failure and cardiac fibrosis.

Investigational treatment for ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) has Marketing Authorisation Application submitted

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited ("Takeda") today announced that a Marketing Authorisation Application (MAA) has been submitted to The European Medicines Agency (EMA) for vedolizumab, an investigational, gut-selective humanized monoclonal antibody for the treatment of adults with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), the two most common types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

New protein discovery may serve as potential marker of drug addiction

Scientists are adding additional brush strokes to the revolutionary new image now emerging for star-shaped cells called astrocytes in the brain and spinal cord. Their report, which suggests a key role for astrocytes in morphine's ability to relieve pain and cause addiction, appears online in ACS' Journal of Proteome Research, a monthly publication.
