Pituitary tumors may lead to glaucomatous changes

Certain tumors of the pituitary gland are associated with glaucomatous abnormalities of the optic nerve head, such as enlarged beta zone, an international research team reports.

Radiotherapy: First choice treatment for low-grade glioma

In a large, international, randomized trial, initial radiotherapy was compared to temozolomide chemotherapy. A statistically significant difference between the two treatment strategies was not observed for progression-free survival, although radiotherapy was numerically favored. However, molecular tumor characterization may allow the treatment approach to be personalized and one or the other treatment modality to be selected.

DASH eating plan reduces heart disease risk in African Americans: Study

A new study suggests yet another reason for Americans to abandon their current fatty diets in favor of one rich in fruits and vegetables and low in saturated fat. Choosing these healthier options appears to significantly reduce the long-term risk of heart disease in patients with mildly elevated blood pressure, particularly African Americans.

Epidemiologist to advance research on hormonal markers for better prediction of breast cancer risk

Epidemiologist Susan Hankinson at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has received a five-year, $4.2 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to build upon and advance her research group's earlier work to identify and validate hormonal markers to better predict the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
