CyDex stockholders approve merger with Ligand

CyDex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that its stockholders have voted to approve an Agreement and Plan of Merger between CyDex and Ligand Pharmaceuticals Incorporated and that closing of the transaction has taken place. CyDex will continue its business operations, based in Lenexa, Kansas, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Ligand.

Clinical dietitian comments on documentary highlighting obesity epidemic

"The movie seeks to remove blame from the individual who is obese and overweight," says Lisa Cimperman, RD, clinical dietitian at University Hospitals Case Medical Center about "Fed Up," a documentary on the obesity epidemic currently in theaters. "The overriding theme is the food industry and sugar are responsible for driving the obesity epidemic."

Mixed progress on MDGs, additional advancement still possible, report says

Poverty rates in 10 African countries have been halved over the last two decades, while child mortality rates have gone up in six sub-Saharan African countries, according to a report (.pdf) from the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and the U.N. Millennium Campaign, which emphasized that progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is possible, the Associated Press/St. Petersburg Times reports (Straziuso, 6/22).

Chronic exposure to noise and carbon monoxide in the workplace induces hearing loss

Those findings are the result of a study conducted with over 8,600 workers exposed to both noise and carbon monoxide in the workplace. Among the riskier professions are welders, firefighters, garage mechanics, truckers, forklift operators and miners.
