Study: COVID-19 causes more severe disease and is more lethal than influenza

In a paper published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, physician-researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center assessed the relative impact of COVID-19 on patients hospitalized with the viral infection in March and April 2020, versus patients hospitalized with influenza during the last five flu seasons at the medical center.

Federal grant extends and expands research into acute kidney failure

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has renewed a grant shared by the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine and the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine that will extend and expand research into acute kidney failure, or acute kidney injury, which affects about 1.2 million hospitalized patients per year and kills 70 to 80 percent of patients in intensive care units who develop the disease.

ETEX receives FDA marketing clearance for CarriGen Porous Bone Substitute Material

ETEX Corporation, an advanced biomaterials company, announced today that the FDA has granted 510(k) clearance of CarriGenĀ® Porous Bone Substitute Material. CarriGen is available for immediate sale through ETEX's independent sales force. CarriGen is the first highly porous bone graft substitute that sets hard upon implantation for a complete defect fill.

Low-dose anticholinergic drugs do not appear to cause cognitive impairment in dementia patients

Researchers whose findings on the detrimental impact of some common medicines on elderly people were widely reported earlier in the summer have found that taking a few of these medicines does not appear to cause further cognitive impairment in those already suffering from dementia.
