Turning small errors into bigger ones: A problem for EHRs

As electronic health record systems become more interconnected, errors may propagate much farther than under old paper-based systems, a recent study suggested. According to a review by the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority, mistakes and near misses involving electronic health records were analogous to those made with paper-based records with one caveat: those made with EHRs tend to be amplified and can affect a larger group of people.

GSK gets green light from FDA to ship Fluarix Quadrivalent influenza vaccine to healthcare providers

GlaxoSmithKline announced today it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to start shipping 2013-2014 FLUARIX QUADRIVALENT (Influenza Virus Vaccine) to CDC distribution centers and U.S. healthcare providers. This is the first season that vaccines protecting against more than three strains of influenza (flu) will be commercially available.

Mechanism through which bacteria attack the immune system discovered

A research team led by Prof. Dr. Winfried Römer and Dr. Elias Hobeika from the University of Freiburg and the University Medical Center in Ulm has discovered a mechanism with which bacteria activate white blood cells and attack an organism's immune system.
