National MS Society invests $29M to support new MS research projects, training awards

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has committed another $29 million to support an expected 83 new MS research projects and training awards.

Magnetic resonance ultrasound fusion biopsy may improve prostate cancer diagnosis

Diagnosis of prostate cancer remains imperfect. Current methods of prostate biopsy are limited by over detection of slow-growing tumors and under detection of clinically relevant cancers. Investigators at the University of California-Los Angeles Department of Urology have found that a new technique of targeted biopsy in a clinic setting, using local anesthesia, may improve diagnosis and aid in selecting which patients are suitable for active surveillance and which need focal therapy (noninvasive techniques for destroying small tumors within the prostate).

Improving the accuracy of violent behaviour prediction may alleviate negative effects of violence

In the future, diagnosing severe personality disorders, evaluating the childhood environment, assessing alcohol consumption and the analysis of the MAOA genotype may provide more accurate means for assessing risk among violent offenders, according to the Finnish research carried out jointly at the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki University Central Hospital Psychiatry Centre.

Research shows colon cancer survivors are more likely to experience pain in back, abdomen

Researchers from the University of Granada have discovered that colon cancer survivors are more likely to suffer future lesions related with pain in the back and lower abdomen than healthy individuals of the same gender and age.
