Glaucoma in developing countries represents a significant health crisis. The great majority of people in developing countries aren't ever tested for glaucoma, so diagnosis and treatment are rare. And if they are diagnosed, they often can't pay for medication, assuming medications are available.
People with type 1 diabetes who have early and asymptomatic kidney damage, as indicated by small amounts of protein in the urine, are six times more likely to die compared to the general population, say researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. Their study, being presented at the 70th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association, also found that when kidneys remained normal over time, people with type 1 diabetes had no greater risk of death than their healthy counterparts.
Although cancer in children is rare, more than 10,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with some form of the disease every year. If these children survive, studies have found that more than two-thirds develop at least one late-effect of treatment, which can include additional cancers, fertility and heart problems, limited limb function, and hearing loss.
