U.S. researchers who collaborate with international scientists are more likely to have their work cited than peers who do not utilize overseas expertise, according to a new study released this week by Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy.

Researchers seek virus genes that allow animal hepatitis E strains infect humans

X.J. Meng, a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech and a virologist at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, has received a four-year, nearly $1.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to better understand the genetic elements that allow hepatitis E virus to transfer from animals to people.

Having tattoos not related to overall health status, study reveals

In a survey-based study published in the International Journal of Dermatology, having tattoos was not significantly related to overall health status, but individuals with tattoos were more likely to be diagnosed with a mental health issue and to report sleep problems.

U.S. amends human research rules

The U.S. Government has proposed major changes in the rules covering research involving human subjects. Officials believe this would strengthen protections while reducing red tape that can impede studies. The experts cited vastly altered research climate as reasons for these recommendations. New features include genomics studies using patients' DNA samples, the use of the Internet and a growing reliance on studies that take place at many sites at once. The new rules cover topics like the informed consent that research participants must provide and the institutional review boards that oversee research at universities and hospitals.
