NIAID expands Tuberculosis Research Units program to drive innovation in TB research

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, is expanding its Tuberculosis Research Units program in an effort to drive innovation in tuberculosis (TB) research. NIAID is awarding up to $15.2 million in fiscal year 2015 and as much as $105.3 million over seven years to fund four institutions that will act as a collaborative TBRU network.

Nurse staffing levels, safety net status both factors in patient outcomes

A new study finds that higher nurse staffing levels can lead to better patient outcomes. However, the study also found this to not always be the case at safety net hospitals. Meanwhile, the Connecticut Mirror reports on hospitals' efforts to reduce readmissions. And, in other news, new research has found that patients are less likely to fill prescriptions when doctors specify brand names instead of allowing generic substitutions.

Accretive Health prices initial public offering at $12.00 per share

Accretive Health, Inc., a provider of end-to-end revenue cycle management services for U.S. healthcare providers today announced the initial public offering of 10,000,000 shares of its common stock at a price to the public of $12.00 per share. Of the 10,000,000 shares being offered to the public, 6,666,667 shares are being offered by Accretive Health and 3,333,333 shares are being offered by selling stockholders.

Bacteria in saliva may be indicative of pancreatic cancer

EPSRC calls for applications for cohort-based doctoral training

One of the UK's largest investments in training for engineering and the physical sciences was announced today by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as it opened a call for applications to support the next group of Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs), to which it is committing £492 million - subject to budget confirmation.
