The drug, Avastin, will be the subject of an unusual Food and Drug Administration hearing to revisit a panel vote last July that steered many doctors away from prescribing the drug for the treatment of breast cancer.
Veran Medical Technologies announced today that it received clearance (K091934) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market a product for the delivery of instruments through the pulmonary tract. "Veran is excited about this clearance as it allows the company to address a huge unmet clinical need in lung cancer diagnosis and treatment," said Jerome R. Edwards, Veran president and chief executive officer.
The blood-brain barrier is biology's proverbial double-edged sword. An impermeable shield of endothelial cells that protects our brains from toxins and other threats that may lurk in circulating blood, the barrier can also exclude therapeutic drugs and, at times, essential biomolecules required for healthy brain development.
Cells begin to accumulate centrosomes-;organelles that play a vital role during cell division-;before they transform into cancer cells, according to a new study of patients with Barrett's esophagus condition, which is associated with esophageal cancer.
