Merck commences Stimuvax Phase 3 trial in Asian patients with NSCLC

Oncothyreon Inc. today announced that Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany, has initiated a Phase 3 trial of Stimuvax(R) (BLP25 liposome vaccine) in Asian patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The trial, named INSPIRE (Stimuvax trial In Asian NSCLC Patients: Stimulating Immune Response), is anticipated to enroll approximately 420 patients in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.

UMass Amherst scientist explores role of citrus peel in decreasing gut inflammation

University of Massachusetts Amherst Professor Hang Xiao, Clydesdale Scholar of Food Science, has received a $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study how substances produced in the gut from citrus compounds are involved in decreasing inflammation in the colon.

New interventional technique effective for controlling hepatic arterial hemorrhage after PD

Delayed hepatic arterial hemorrhage after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is not a common but a fatal complication, occurring in 7% of all patients. Its ideal management remains unclear and controversial. A research article published on August 7, 2010 in the World Journal of Gastroenterology addresses this question. The authors reported the clinical outcome of 9 patients with life-threatening hemorrhage from a ruptured hepatic artery pseudoaneurysm after PD after treatment with a new interventional technique, namely placement of stent-grafts.
