Landec first quarter revenues increase 39% to $102.1 million

Landec Corporation today reported results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2013 ended August 26, 2012. Revenues increased 39% to $102.1 million compared to revenues of $73.3 million for the first quarter a year ago. Net income increased 40% to $2.5 million or $0.10 per share compared to $1.8 million or $0.07 per share for the first quarter of last year.

New graphene system can detect activity levels of interfaced normal and cancer cells

What can't graphene do? You can scratch "detect cancer" off of that list. By interfacing brain cells onto graphene, researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have shown they can differentiate a single hyperactive cancerous cell from a normal cell, pointing the way to developing a simple, noninvasive tool for early cancer diagnosis.

New study points to cannabis as trigger for schizophrenia

Scientists believe that schizophrenia, a disorder caused by an imbalance in the brain's chemical reactions, is triggered by a genetic interaction with environmental factors. A new Tel Aviv University study published in Human Molecular Genetics now points to cannabis as a trigger for schizophrenia.

Researchers differentiate human stem cells to become heart cells with cardiomyopathy

Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have for the first time differentiated human stem cells to become heart cells with cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle cells are abnormal. The discovery will allow scientists to learn how those heart cells become diseased and from there, they can begin developing drug therapies to stop the disease from occurring or progressing. The study is published in the June 9th issue of Nature.
