Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals receives FDA approval for Mirapex ER in treatment of early PD

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Mirapex ERĀ® (pramipexole dihydrochloride) extended-release tablets, a new once-daily treatment option for the signs and symptoms of early idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). MIRAPEX ER is not indicated in advanced PD. Parkinson's disease is a chronic, slowly progressive and potentially debilitating neurological condition affecting nearly one million people in the U.S., with one person newly diagnosed every nine minutes.

Amorfix Life Sciences uses A(4) test to detect accumulation of Abeta in mouse models of AD

Amorfix Life Sciences, a company focused on treatments and diagnostics for misfolded protein diseases including Alzheimer's disease, has used its A(4) test to compare the rate of accumulation of aggregated Abeta in the brain tissue of various mouse models of AD. Amorfix presented this new data at the International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease this week.

Diversity of intestinal stem cells is greater than previously thought

Tales from the crypt are supposed to be scary, but new research from Vanderbilt University, the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and colleagues shows that crypts can be places of renewal too: intestinal crypts, that is. Intestinal crypts are small areas of the intestine where new cells are formed to continuously renew the digestive tract. By focusing on one protein expressed in our intestines called Lrig1, the researchers have identified a special population of intestinal stem cells that respond to damage and help to prevent cancer.
