Person's ‘brain speed' may matter more than other risk factors for geriatric falls

Zimmer second-quarter net sales increase 3.7% to $1.06 billion

Zimmer Holdings, Inc. today reported financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2010. The Company reported second quarter net sales of $1.06 billion, an increase of 3.7% reported and 3.3% constant currency over the second quarter of 2009. Diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $0.82 reported and $1.09 adjusted, an increase of 9.0% adjusted over the prior year period.

First whole genome sequence of Parsi breast cancer woman

Avesthagen Limited has yet again established its position as a leader in the successful application of next gen technologies as it announces the completion of the first Parsi breast cancer whole genome sequence of a 74-year-old Parsi woman with a heritable form of breast cancer. The incidence of breast cancer in most populations is strongly linked to a genetic basis but little is known about the variants at the present time.

Extra radiation dose prevents breast cancer return in young women

Women 40 years and younger with early-stage breast cancer who receive an additional high dose of radiation (boost dose) after undergoing breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) and standard radiation treatment are almost twice as likely to be free of cancer 10 years after treatment compared to those who don't receive the boost dose, according to a large European study presented at the Plenary I session on October 29, 2007, at the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology's 49th Annual Meeting in Los Angeles.

Mineral and multivitamin supplements can lower risk of colon cancer

Could the use of vitamin and mineral supplements in a regular diet help to reduce the risk of colon cancer and protect against carcinogens? A study published in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology (CJPP) found that rats given regular multivitamin and mineral supplements showed a significantly lower risk of developing colon cancer when they were exposed to carcinogens.
