Researchers at Queen Mary University of London and University College London have shown that using stem cells derived from patients could help find new treatments for a group of congenital muscular dystrophies.
The House Judiciary Committee today called upon national experts and stakeholders in the fields of science and sport to better understand the effects of head injuries on players in the National Football League (NFL). Nationally recognized sports physician and neurosurgeon, Julian E. Bailes, M.D. was called to provide expert testimony based on decades of research detailing how repetitive head trauma on the field leads to long-term neurological damage among athletes.
University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston researchers have been awarded a two-year, $1.25 million National Institutes of Health grant to develop a method of custom-growing human lung tissue to make a three-dimensional model for biomedical studies.
Sheri Lewis, 59, of Seattle, needed a hip transplant. Bradley Fuller, 63, of nearby Kirkland, needed chemotherapy and radiation when the pain in his jaw turned out to be throat cancer. And Kim Bruzas, 55, of Waitsburg, hundreds of miles away, needed emergency care to stop sudden —and severe — rectal bleeding.
According to a new review, a vegetarian diet is very effective for weight loss and vegetarians tend to be slimmer than meat-eaters, have lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other life-threatening conditions linked to obesity.
