BMA(NI) concerned about affect on NHS waiting lists if proposal to cut consultants' additional programmed work goes ahead

Hospital consultants in Northern Ireland have expressed their dismay and frustration to the British Medical Association about Department of Health plans to cut their programmed work across NI by 1800 hours each week, for at least the next year. This, in effect, equates to removing 53 consultants from the NHS in Northern Ireland.

Lumbar puncture, PET scan not useful to establish diagnosis of Alzheimer's

Investigators from the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, have shown that in most elderly patients invasive and expensive techniques, i.e. lumbar puncture and PET scan, are not useful to establish the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. They arrived at this conclusion after analysis of data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), a large collaborative research project of medical centers in the USA and Canada.

Updated report analyzing approval rates at FDA published

According to its research service, BioMedTracker, the rate of drugs that were approved by the FDA in 2008 and 2009 has remained close to the historical low seen in 2007.

Protein in the blood could predict type 2 diabetes many years before diagnosis

A large study led by Lund University in Sweden has identified a protein in the blood that could predict type 2 diabetes up to nineteen years before the onset of the disease.
