New evidence on the link between suicide and the economy shows that the monthly suicide rate in New York City from 1990 to 2006 was 29% higher at the economic low point in 1992 than at the peak of economic growth in 2000.

Patients care about how well pain, nausea, or treatment side effects are managed when evaluating the quality of the medical care they receive, but information about these experiences is not generally collected. To incorporate the values that patients care most about into formal assessments of provider and health system performance, a UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center researcher led an expert panel to create a playbook on how to best develop, analyze and use patient-focused measures.

Being overweight or obese during pregnancy increases risk of birth defects, study finds

The risk of babies being born with major birth defects increases, the more overweight or obese a mother is, according to a Swedish study. The authors of the research say their findings "underline the importance of having a maternal BMI in the normal range before pregnancy" and that efforts should be made to encourage women of reproductive age to adopt a healthy lifestyle and obtain a normal body weight before conception.

Iressa (gefinitib) chemotherapy combination proves safe for head and neck cancer patients

Patients undergoing treatment for advanced head and neck cancers may respond well to the addition of gefinitib to chemotherapy, according to a study sponsored by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group and chaired by Ethan Argiris, M.D., associate professor of medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and co-leader of the Head and Neck Cancer Program of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI).

Novel trial uses a virtual village to treat HIV-associated loneliness

A new clinical trial designed by Maile Young Karris, MD, internal medicine physician and infectious disease specialist at UC San Diego Health, seeks to discover whether people living with HIV can benefit from emotional support offered by a virtual community, and from physical support and services delivered by community volunteers.
