Protein that was thought to simply turn genes on and off now looks to be more like a cellular dimmer switch

The scientists showed for the first time that when certain parts of a protein molecule are modified - flexible, randomly structured regions believed to be only minor players in the protein world - they become important in turning genes on and off, but in a way that resembles a dimmer switch rather than an on-off switch.

Salix Pharmaceuticals announces $200 million convertible senior notes offering

Salix Pharmaceuticals, Ltd. today announced that it intends to offer, subject to market and other conditions, $200 million aggregate principal amount of its convertible senior notes due 2015 under an automatically effective shelf registration statement on file with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Salix also expects to grant the underwriters an overallotment option to purchase up to an additional $30 million aggregate principal amount of notes on the same terms and conditions.

African Leaders Malaria Alliance launches malaria scorecard

"The African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) has launched a scorecard to improve the fight against malaria on the African continent," IRIN reports. "Updated quarterly, it provides information from each country on policies formulated, preventative measures initiated, money spent, lives saved and lost," and "also tracks tracer indicators for maternal, newborn and child health," the news service writes.
